Pangil Ahmed Kutty Musaliar

An erudite scholar, writer and orator, Pangil Ahmed Kutty Musaliar (1888-1945) was a leading Sunni Shafi’ī scholar of the Malabar province of Kerala. He was one of the founding members of Samastha Kerala Jam’iyyatul Ulema, a Sunni-Shafi’ī organization of scholars in Kerala.

Biography

Pangil Ahmed Kuty Musaliar was born in 1888 in the village Pangu of Malappuram district. At the age of 7, he byhearted the Holy Quran. He studied in Pangu till the age of 14. Later, he acquired knowledge in Islamic sciences from prominent scholars of the time, namely Al Shaikh Aliyyuthuri, Karimbanakkal Ahmed Musaliar, and Pallipuram Kappad Muhammad Musaliar. He joined Baqiyāth of Vellore for higher studies. After obtaining Baqavi degree in Islamic sciences, he joined Lathwwefiya of Vellore. Upon completion of his studies from there, he returned to his native place in 1912. By then he developed an expertise in different fields of Islamic knowledge and gained proficiency in languages such as Arabic, Urdu, and Persian. He conducted his first Dars (theological lessons) in Pangu, his native place.From 1915 until the period of Malabar rebellion in 1921 he remained in Mannarkkaad and conducted Dars there. After peace was restored in Malabar, Ahmed kuty Musaliar took charge of an age old Dars at Valiya kulangara Masjid in Tanur of Malappuram district. Under his leadership, the Dars later became Islahul Uloom Arabic College.

Major Contributions

Among the most notable of his contributions is the establishment of Samasta Kerala Jam’iyyatul Ulema. Being a good writer, he has written many books such as Al Bayanu Shafi fil ‘ilmil arudhi wa al Qawafī, An-Nahjul Qaweem, Thanqeehil mantiqi fi Sharahi thasreehil mantiqi, Tuhfatul Ahbab, Isahamatil hamza, Islathul kurafaat, Najmu Alaaqathil majasil mursal etc. He also played an important role in the growth of religious institutions such as the Dars at Tanur, which grew into Islahul Uloom Arabic College. He published the first Arabi-Malayalam Magazine ‘Al Bayan’ in 1930 and was the Samasta member to have been part of the Khilafat movement of 1921.
