Muhammad Meeran Musaliar

Biography

Prominent scholar and orator Muhammad Meeran Musaliar [1894-1947] was one of the earliest leaders of Samasta Kerala Jam’iyyatul Ulema. He was the president of Samastha when it was founded in 1925. In 1926, when the organization was reconstituted and Varakkal thangal elected as the president, he continued as one among the vice presidents. He was born in 1894 in Kavanur of Malappuram district to Karuvaraparambil Muhammad kuty. He had his primary education from Keedakkaat Ali kutty Musaliar who was a mudarris and a Qazi. He also studied under Cherussery Ahammad kutty Musaliar and Karimbanakkal Ahmed Musaliar. In 1924, he received a Baqavi degree and took charge as a Mudarris in Beypore. After that he served as a Qazi and Mudarris in Nilambur. He married Sayyidath Ayisha also called Cherubeevi while working as a Mudarris in Kattumunda. He had two children. After his marriage, he settled in Pathiriyalungal of Thiruvali panchayath.

Major Contributions

A multi-lingual scholar, he was proficient in languages such as Arabic, Urdu, English, Persian, Tamil and Malayalam. He was Proficient in Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) and was also a shaikh of different Sufi orders. People from different religious backgrounds came to visit him and drink the water on which he cast prayers of cure for ailments. He served as a mudarris at Beypore and also as a Qazi at Nilambur. After visiting countries such as Myanmar, Singapore, and Malaysia, he set off to perform Hajj in 1930. After hajj, he joined Kattumunda as a Mudarris. He had a large collection of books which many scholars inherited after his death. His wife died in 1973. Meeran Musaliar died in 1947 and was buried in Katumunda Jumua Palli Qabarstan.
