Maulana Abdul Bari

Maulana Abdul Bari (1881-1965) was an eminent scholar of Northern Kerala. He was one of the founding figures of Samasta Kerala Jam’iyyatul Ulema.

Biography

Maulana Abdul Bari was born in 1881 to a prominent Islamic scholar of Kerala Ahmad koyakuty Musaliar. He had his basic education from Dars in Nadapuram, Tirurangadi and Ponnani. Then, he joined Baqiyath of Vellore and earned a Baqavi degree in 1903. After his studies, he conducted a Dars in Madrasatul Jifriyya of Kozhikode district. From 1910 until the Malabar uprisings in 1921, he conducted Dras in Kanancheri. In 1921, he moved to the mosque in his hometown Puthuparambu. In 1945, he was elected to the leadership position of Samasta. He was an affluent person and reserved all of his property to be used as waqf after his demise. He died on 29 july 1965.

Major Contributions

Maulana Abdul Bari was a great writer. Proficient in Arabic, Urdu, Persian, English, and Malayalam languages, Maulana Abdul Bari wrote many articles. Among his important works are Sihahu shaikhaini, Siraatul Islam, Al Waseelatul Udhma, Fat’hul Bari, Al mutafaridhu etc.

He was one of the important figures to bring Al Bayan, the first Arabi-Malayalam magazine to publication after it stopped in 1929. In 1962, he held a council to establish colleges under Samasta to award degrees in Islamic education. This paved the way for the establishment of institutions such as the Jamia Nooriyya located in Pattikad of Malappuram district. He also led Samasta to form a new faction named SYS (Sunni Yuvajana Sangham) to guide the youth in their religious life and inspire them toward organisational activities. He also established mosques and Khutbkhana and organised Dars in Cheroor, Parappur and Puthuparambu.
