Malu Hajjuma

Mallu Hajjuma-Parvetty Fatima [1879-1960] was a freedom fighter who fought against the British during the Malabar Rebellion. She was one of the few women fighters who is believed to have taken up arms and fought the British during the rebellion.

Biography

She was born into a wealthy family to Koyyamu Hajji in Karuvarakundd in present day Malappuram district. She belonged to the Parvetty family. Koyyamu Hajji arranged for a teacher who taught English and Malayalam to his children. It is said that she had also worked briefly in the Manjeri Taluk office.

She was married twice before marrying her cousin, Variamkunnan Haji, who was one of the foremost leaders of the Malabar rebellion. They married in the year 1920. It is believed that she fought alongside him in many battles. They lived underground in rebel territory in the forests of Nilambur during the rebellion.

It is believed that Mallu Hajjuma fought legal battles against the British to win back the family properties confiscated by the British for participating in the rebellion. She won back the property belonging to both Variamkunnan and her father and brother, who were also arrested for participating in the rebellion. Her father had died in prison in the Calicut sub jail in 1928, meanwhile her brother was released from jail after serving 15 years. She donated some of the land to build the first school at Karuvarakund and also donated land to the local mosques at Karuvakund and Thuvur.

At a time when Muslim women could not even imagine going to the mosques, Mallu Hajjuma was a member of the Mosque committee at Karuvarakund. She died in 1961 and is buried next to her father.
