M.C.C Abdu Rahman Moulavi

Prominent Muslim scholar and reformer M.C.C Abdul Rahman moulavi (1906-1964) was born in 1906 in Parappanangadi of Malappuram district of Kerala. He belonged to the reformist Salafi trend and was an ardent critic of the superstitious practices among Muslims. He was also one of the earliest leaders of Kerala Jam’iyyatul Ulema.

Biography

Abdul Rahman moulavi was born as the second son of prominent Muslim scholar and reformer Chalilakathu Kunjahmed Haji and Ibraheema. At the age of 7, he joined Darul Uloom with his brother Ahmed Moulavi and studied under his father Chalilakath Kunjahmed Haji. Till the age of 10, he studied in Madrasatul Munawwara of Pulickal too. Later, he studied in Mannarkkad Dars under his father.

In 1921, he joined Baqiyathu Swalihath, an Islamic college located in Vellore of Tamilnadu. In 1935, he completed his degree in Afzalul Ulema. He married the daughter of C. H. Ahmed master of Tirurangadi. She died during childbirth. After her death, Moulavi married Amina Swafiya of Chennamangalur. He had two children namely Dr M.C.C. Abdullah and Abdussalam. He died on 1 January 1964 in the office room of his college Madeenatul Uloom.

Social reform

He was an active member of the Kerala Jam’iyyaul Ulema from the time it was founded in 1924. He served as the secretary of the organization. Upon his direction, the organization registered itself under the Societies Registration Act, of 1860. He was invited to Darul Uloom of Vazhakkad 30 years after his father was expelled from there due to reformist ideology. He served as a teacher at Madrasatul Muhammadiya of Kozhikode as well.

During this period, he established a company named ‘Islamiya company’. The company published several Islamic books in Arabi-malayalam and Malayalam languages such as a monthly titled “Margadarshakan”. He was also a constant contributor to ‘Al Murshid magazine’ published in Arabi-Malayalam language under Jamiyyatul ulema. He was an active participant in the Literature society, which was formed by him to translate the Holy Quran and make it accessible to the public. As a part of this initiative, he along with K.M Moulavi and P.K Musa moulavi started preparing a translation for the Holy Quran, of which only the first part could be released. He also wrote books titled ‘Al Quranu wa sunnah’, and ‘Chattathinnoru chottu’.

Moulavi was also a partner of ‘The Yuvalokam company’ based in Kozhikode. He was also one of the important figures to lay foundations for Madeenatul Uloom Arabic college in Pulikkal on July 1, 1947. Madeenatul Uloom was born out of the decision to start an Arabic college under Kerala Jam’iyyatul Ulema. The decision to establish a college was made in the annual conference of KJU held on 25 December 1946 in Tirrurangadi. From the time it started functioning, Moulavi served as a principal of the college till his death.
