Khan Bahadur Chekuty Sahib

Koorimannil Valaimannil Chekutty, also known as Anakayam Chekutty Sahib (death.1921) was a British-supportive Muslim police officer under the British government. He is commonly referred to in history as ‘Khan Bahadur Chekutty Sahib’ and was the Adhikari(landowner) of Pandalur in Ernad of Malabar district.

Biography

Khan Bahadur Chekuty Sahib lived in Anakkayam village in Manjeri of Ernad of Malabar district.was the Adhikari(landowner) of Pandalur in Ernad of Malabar district. He worked as a Circle Inspector in the British Police Force. He was honoured with the title of Khan Bahadur by the British after he retired from the position. During his service, he was very active in arresting those who plotted plans against the British. Consequently, a number of Mappila protesters were attacked and detained, including the father of Varriam Kunnathu Kunnath Kunjahammad Haji who had to leave the country as a result.

Role in Malabar rebellion

Chekutty had opposed Varian Kunnathu Kunjahammed Haji, who had organized Shuhadaya Maulud, Padapatt, and vow rituals, which had been then forbidden by the British Government.
During the rebellion, he visited Ali Musliyar and reminded him about the losses that would occur if Muslims moved a little further against the British.

As a representative of Ernad, Chekkutty leaked updates about the protestors and their decisions to the British.

Death

On 30 August 1921, Mappila protestors led by Variyam Kunnaththu Kunjahmed Haji circled Chekutty Sahib’s house. Upon entering the courtyard they called out to Chekkutty Sahib who was upstairs, asking him regarding the order of the Subdivisional magistrate to produce their guns before them. He came to the window and responded that all the guns needed to be brought to Malappuram(not there)Further, .a gang who stood behind the trees shot the Inspector and he died in the second shot.
