K MOIDEENKUTTI HAJI

Kattachirakkal Moideenkutti Haji aka Bava Haji (1918-1997) was an eminent politician and speaker of Kerala Legislative Assembly. He was a member of the first Legislative
Assembly in Kerala in 1957.

Biography

K Moideenkutti Haji was born on 1 July, 1918 as the son of Shri K. Alikutty Haji and Kuncheema. His original home was at Annara near Thunchanparambu, Tirur, in Malappuram district of Kerala. But in the later period, he lived in Muthoor, a locality in Tirur. His educational qualification was intermediate, TTC. He worked as a teacher at Alisseri LP School, Vettam and Pachattiri LP School, Tirur. Also he worked as Clerk in the Revenue department.

In 1954, he was the opposition leader of Malabar District Board and was an active volunteer of Sarvodaya Sangham headed by K.Kelappan. His political growth started after defeating Punnakkal Kuttisankaran Nair.He got elected to the first Kerala Legislative Assembly in 1957 from Tirur by defeating P P Alikkutti of Congress. He contested in the consecutive elections to the Legislative Assembly. In 1960, he defeated K P Bavukkutty of Communist Party and in 1965, he
defeated Adv. M. Padmanabhan Nair of Congress party. In 1967 and 1970, he defeated R. Muhammed of Congress party and in 1970 he became the speaker of Kerala Legislative Assembly from 22-10-1970 to 08-05-1975. During the period of 1974-75, Muslim League party split into two and became All India league and Indian Union Muslim League. Moideenkutti Haji resigned from the office of speaker on 7 May, 1975 and joined the All India League and he became a national leader during the period of 1975-77.

In 1977, he contested in the election to Legislative Assembly against P T Kunjutti Haji of Muslim League and got defeated for seventeen thousand votes. In 1983, he became the State President of All India League. And in 1984, he contested in the Loksabha election from Kozhikode against Dr. K G Adiyodi and got defeated. In 1985, both All India League and Indian Union Muslim League were merged. In 1987, Moideenkutti Haji got elected to Kerala Legislative Assembly and became leader of Muslim League party in legislative Assembly. He contested against Karuniyan Said from Congress (Socialist) party. He also contested from Manjeri to Loksabha election against Ibrahim Settu and got defeated.

He was the chairman of Public Accounts Committee (1976–77), Estimates Committee (1975), Rural Institute, Thavanur, Kerala Finance Corporation and Kerala Agro Industries Corporation Limited. He was the Member of Muslim League High Power Committee and Deputy Leader & Whip of Muslim League Legislature Party. Also Vice President of Kerala State Muslim League and Joint Secretary of Muslim League State Committee. Beyond that he was the governing board member of Tirur SSM Board Polytechnic and chairman of Technical School of Tavanur.

He had two wives; Ayishumma Hajjumma and Beefathima and had 12 children including 6 sons and 6 daughters. He passed away on 12-09-1997. He was the Kerala representative of Central Waqf Board during that time and he died while he was travelling to Delhi for a meeting of Waqf board.
