Chakkeeri Ahmed Kuty

Chakkeeri Ahamed Kutty (1915–1993) was a social worker and political leader of the Indian Union Muslim League from Kerala. He served as the Minister for Education from 1973 to 1977 and as the speaker of the Kerala Legislative Assembly from 1977 to 1980.

Biography

Chakkeeri Ahamed Kutty was born on 23 December 1915 to Chakkiri Moideen Kutty Sahib, a renowned singer of Mappila songs and Palliyaali Biriyumma in Cheroor of Malappuram district. He studied the rules of Quran recitation from his father. Further, he went to Kuttoor Primary School, Vengara Government U.P. school and high schools of Manjeri and Tirur. He acquired religious education under Chalilakath Abdulla Musliyar. He began his political career at the age of 17, by joining the Congress party and working alongside Muhammad Abdu Rahman Sahib, an esteemed political leader in Kerala at the time. In 1932, he was elected as the Board member of Ernad Taluk

In 1939, he left the Congress party and joined the Indian Union Muslim League due to the Congress party’s negligence towards issues of Muslims. He was elected as the representative of the Kottakkal division of the Madras state in 1952. He was elected from the Kuttipuram constituency in the first election held after the formation of the Kerala state in 1957. He served as the President of Vengara panchayat from 1964 to 1969. He also won as a candidate of the Muslim League in 1970 and 1977 to the Kerala Legislative Assembly. Further, he became the speaker of the Kerala Legislative Assembly and continued in the position till 1980. In 1973, he was elected as the education minister.

Later, he took a short departure from politics and joined Janata Dal in 1993. However, due to deteriorating health, he couldn’t involve much in the political activities of the party. He died on 1 January 1992. He married Mammiyya and C.M. Ayisha and had eleven children.

Major Contributions

He was an active participant in not only politics but social and cultural activities. From 1948, he served as the president of P.C.C. Society, Vengara Panchayat and as Head of the Cooperative store of Vengara. While he was a minister, he worked hard to bring educational upliftment for Muslims. He allowed 200 schools to be started in the Malappuram district. The All-Promotion-Scheme was introduced in lower primary classes during his tenure. He publicized ‘The Badar kaavyam’ written by his father Chakiri Moideen Kutty in Malayalam language. He was a prominent person to handle the affairs of Valiya Jumuath Palli of Cheroor, a member of the Tirurangadi Orphanage Committee, President of Ansar Arabic College Committee, advisor of the Vengara High school and Jumua masjid.
